La Fédération anglaise a prévenu dimanche que le comportement d'Emmanuel Adebayor lors de la victoire (4-2) de Manchester City contre son ancien club d'Arsenal, samedi, allait faire l'objet d'un «examen approfondi». Arrivé cet été à City après une saison en demi-teinte à Arsenal, Adebayor a provoqué les supporters londoniens après avoir marqué un but. Il est aussi soupçonné d'avoir volontairement blessé l'attaquant d'Arsenal Robin Van Persie lors d'un duel.
Adebayor s'est excusé
«Notre équipe dirigeante va se livrer (lundi) à un examen approfondi des deux incidents qui ont été soulignés et viendra apporter des réponses aux médias en début de semaine prochaine», a déclaré le directeur général de la FA, Ian Watmore, sur la BBC Radio 5. M. Watmore a cependant refusé de se prononcer sur les sanctions possibles, qui relèvent de la commission de discipline «si l'on va jusque là».

Dès samedi soir, Adebayor a présenté ses excuses pour la provocation aux supporters, qui lui a valu un carton jaune. «Cela ne se reproduira pas», a-t-il insisté, assurant également qu'il n'avait pas volontairement blessé son ancien coéquipier: «Il a essayé de me tacler et je n'ai pas eu le temps de retirer mon pied. Je suis désolé». Une version des faits contestés par Van Persie, lequel estime qu'Adebayor a voulu le blesser. (AFP)

je viens de remarquer un truc terrible : depuis que je suis revenu de vacances j'ai vu 2 matchs de championnat, ceux contre Man U et Man city.....2 défaites alors qu'ils jouaient super bien !!! je suis leur chat noir...je n'ai plus qu'à me pendre !  je me tape les matchs de merde, hormis contre le celtic mais il a été entaché d'un péno et d'une suspension d'eduardo, donc pas encore de matchs sensationnels pour moi, pas comme le match contre everton

Je pense que ce bonhomme est totalement aigri.
Il se croit un très bon joueur (ce qu' il est) et ça a du totalement le décevoir de voir que peu de monde le retenait à Arsenal.
Parceque dans 'l absolu, passer de Arsenal à City c' est une forme de régression.

Je ne vois pas d' autres raisons à son animosité envers Arsenal

Je souhaite qu'il assume au moins son geste, il passe son temps à s'excuser et on n'a du mal à croire à sa sincérité. C'est peut être un bon footballeur, mais il a des lacunes sur le plan humain, et pour moi l'aspect humain est aussi important que le sportif. Le respect de l'adversaire, le fair play, le respect du public des valeurs de dignité qu'il faut transmettre aux plus jeunes, notamment aux enfants. Lui il ne m'inspire que du mépris

Selon The Mirror la FA serait sur le point de suspendre le togolais de 4 matchs pour le geste sur van Persie. Il est aussi punit pour son comportement pendant le match, notamment sa célébration qui a provoquée un mouvement de foule. Un steward a été assomé dans la mélée et des sièges et obgets ont été jeté sur la pelouse. Ses excuses de circonstances, demandé par Man City pour que sa peine ne soit pas trop lourde, n'auront pas convaincu.

Arsenal supporters' group REDaction have branded Emmanuel Adebayor \"a disgrace\" but warned Manchester City fans should not be absolved from blame.

Although much of the focus of supporters' behaviour centred on a Gunners fan who is thought to have thrown a stewards' chair at Adebayor as he celebrated scoring City's third goal, the home crowd were today accused of throwing coins and plastic bottles into the visitors' section.

Adebayor became a hate figure at Arsenal after flirting with a big- money move last summer before finally joining Manchester City for £25million earlier this summer and REDaction spokesman Mark Brindle said: \"He's gone too far. As much as he protested his innocence, we all know how he courted a move to Barcelona or AC Milan and only stayed for the money so it was always going to be a volatile occasion.

\"He had one good season at Arsenal and although he had a lot of support last season, there was an increasing section who saw how lazy he was becoming.

\"What he did was a disgrace and I am sure even though he apologised, the Manchester City press office got to him and told him that's what he should do. Whether he meant it or not, I don't know.

\"The only reason he left was for the money. There was no loyalty from him and all he has done is cement his hatred among the fans.

\"City fans used to sing racist songs about Adebayor and I have been told some of their actions on Saturday were questionable to say the least.\"

One Arsenal supporter at the match, Mickey Polston, who has followed the club home and away since 1973, claimed City fans were also to blame for the unsavoury atmosphere in the stadium.

He said: \"When Adebayor scored, the City fans were throwing bottles and coins at us. A couple of stewards' seats were thrown at Adebayor from the Arsenal end and the whole situation got out of hand as there were women and children who were at the front of the away end who were left crying after being crushed.\" Adebayor defended himself by insisting he acted on impulse and as much as manager Mark Hughes may protest his new signing is \"an emotional boy\", Saturday afternoon was littered with examples of anticipation of the occasion.

Adebayor greeted Arsenal club staff in the tunnel before kick-off but was said to be \"brimming with nervous energy\" while repeatedly glancing towards the away dressing room.

It is understood he arrived at the ground hours before the game began and could be seen warming up on the pitch alongside a member of City's coaching staff long before his team-mates were on the pitch.

After a series of heavy challenges - the first of which came from Nicklas Bendtner with only six minutes played - Adebayor waited to kick off the second half by exchanging passes with Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.

Although the pair worked well in tandem in their days at Emirates Stadium, Fabregas merely poked the ball back to Adebayor, who instead played the ball to a more receptive Alex Song.

It was noticeable that Adebayor's pre-match interview he claimed \"it will be funny playing against players who I see like brothers such as Song, [Gael] Clichy and Emmanuel Eboue\" as it was these three players who were among the first to embrace him at the final whistle.

William Gallas also made a point of shaking hands but Robin van Persie stormed towards the tunnel and any apology Adebayor claims to have made did not take place on the pitch.

By contrast, Kolo Toure, another former Gunner, waited patiently in the tunnel as Arsene Wenger fulfilled his media commitments before the pair shared a hearty handshake and a short conversation in which the Arsenal manager asked how life had changed for him at City. There was no sign of Adebayor.

Polston added: \"Adebayor's actions were very irresponsible on his part and the anger towards him comes from how motivated he is by money.

\"If he had sprinted in an Arsenal shirt as fast as he did to celebrate in front of us on Saturday, I doubt anyone would have criticised him in the first place.\"

Congratulations Ade. Your achievement is monumental. Not for your classless debacle last summer where you openly flirted with other clubs and annoyed us all (I actually wrote a piece after the Emirates Cup game against Madrid last year saying we should lay off the boos for everyone's benefit) nor for last season's lazy, petulant display or for the fact you are now the Premiership's highest-paid player despite not being the best player in the league by a long shot. No, your achievement lies in singlehandedly making yourself one of the most despised players in the eyes of Gooners and many other fans. Within the space of a year and a bit, you have excelled the likes of Cashley and even Teddy Sheringham.


Adebayor: Moved a lot faster than he did in an Arsenal shirt last season

Sheringham had to work very hard throughout his career to make himself despised by Gooners. Having grown up a Spurs fan, playing for them and United, scoring his fair share of goals against us and revelling in it when he did made him a classic figure of contempt amongst Gooners everywhere.

I'm not even going to go into the reasons why Cashley is so disliked as that has been gone through a thousand times but the way he chickened out of playing at Ashburton Grove and the Carling Cup with mythical injuries such as a hurt leg or whatever it was in his first season at Chelsea certainly added to the already-intense dislike. But he is more of an Anakin Skywalker type figure- a golden boy with great potential who turned to the dark side. And to be fair to Cashley, whatever off-field issues there were with him in his last year or so he still showed a degree of professionalism on the pitch up until his last game in Arsenal colours which is more than can be said for Adebayor. Whether Cole follows Skywalker's example and redeems himself by throwing his master (that parasitic agent of his) down a huge well remains to be seen but it's a nice thought at least.

On the subject of hate figures, I suppose Van Nistelroy deserves a mention, although last time he played against Arsenal (in that same game against Madrid last summer) Philippe Senderos kept him in his pocket so some might argue that Arsenal had the last laugh in that respect and that was humiliation enough for the horse-faced one.

But in the space of one year Adebayor has risen above those three who have earned the dislike of Gooners over the years. There was the stamp on Van Persie, a player who basically did the work for both of them last season, the long sprint to celebrate in front of travelling Gooners (he ran more in that instance than he did over the whole course of last season), the early stamp on Cesc's ankle, not to mention the fact that even Craig Bellamy showed more class than him which says everything really.

But whilst City look dangerous, I have a feeling it won't last. Steve, my Man City-supporting workmate, does not like the fact that someone who spent the majority of his career (and by far his best years) in United red is managing his beloved Citeh and I doubt he's alone in that opinion. When he asked me how I'd feel if Sheringham became Arsenal manager I couldn't help but sympathise with him.

He's one of the most overrated managers ever - being half-Welsh myself (anyone who knows my full name knows I have definite Welsh credentials which is more that can be said for Andy Townsend's, ahem, 'Irish' credentials) I have always kept half an eye on the Welsh national team. And that famous 2-1 win over Italy aside, he wasn't that great for Wales. He had a side with the best chance of qualification for a major tournament in a long time and he blew it big time.

At City, he has a lot more egos to manage (one in particular) and given his United past I have a feeling it won't take long for fans to turn on him if results go badly and sooner or later he'll be collecting his P45. But fair play to him for building a career off a single result I suppose. As for Ade, he'll probably get his comeuppance sooner or later. He's only at City because the likes of AC Milan and Barcelona were put off by his over-inflated ego and ridiculous wage demands. Here's hoping Senderos keeps him in his pocket in the home game when Arsenal get revenge at Ashburton Grove later this season.
