Man City, Man Utd) seront relevés.

[img align=G]http://img.skysports.com/09/02/218x298/08-02-2009NigelWinterburn_1863502.jpg[/img]ARSENAL's winning run might have come to an end on Tuesday night, but I don't think Arsene Wenger should be too worried about that.

They will still qualify for the knockout stages and it was much better to drop a couple of points in this game than say against Birmingham or Fulham recently when it easily could have happened.

Six wins out of eight in the league is looking like a good start, especially after the results of Chelsea and Liverpool at the weekend, and I have firmly believed since the start of the season that Arsenal will be strong title contenders this year.

For some reason I have never looked at this Liverpool side under Rafael Benitez and thought 'here is a team that is going to win the title.'

Even last season, when they had such a good start and then won the big games against Manchester United and Chelsea, they never really looked convincing.

In the end they dropped too many points in games against lesser teams, and if you do that then it is a waste winning the big games, as Arsenal know only too well.

Liverpool were so poor at Sunderland and then getting beaten by Lyon on Tuesday night has just piled the pressure on Benitez ahead of the United game on Sunday. Another defeat there and they really could be on the ropes.

Arsenal don't need to worry about other teams though, they should just focus on their own games and going to West Ham on Sunday will not be a simple task.

Yes, the Hammers have had a dreadful start to the season, but at Upton Park in a derby they are never easy to beat, and Gianfranco Zola will be desperate to turn their fortunes around.

I remember the last season I was there when West Ham were relegated in 2003, we had a terrible start and just felt that things were going to improve, but they never did and confidence just got lower and lower going into games.

And that was with a team that had the likes of Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and Paolo di Canio in it, whereas the Hammers don't look so strong on paper this season.

But the fans there love nothing better than beating one of the big names and they will be hoping for a shock on Sunday. We should be in for another entertaining game.

Citer[large]'Kieran Gibbs can shine with Arsenal, but World Cup talk is premature'[/large]

Gibbs has been waiting for his chance this season and now he looks like he will get a run of games with Clichy being ruled out with a back problem.

I liked what I saw of Gibbs at the back end of last season - he is very quick and strong going forward but I do think there is still a little bit of room for improvement defensively.

A lot of playing at full-back is about your positional game, knowing where to be when the ball is in certain areas, and you only really learn that with games and as you get a bit more experience.

Gibbs is only 20, and has only played 20 games for Arsenal, so he is by no means the finished article yet. But he has shown great potential and this is a young English player who has come through the ranks we are talking about, not a big-money signing.

There has been talk of him being an outside bet for the England squad as back-up to Ashley Cole, but it's maybe a little early for that.

Players like Wayne Bridge and Stephen Warnock must have a better chance of taking that slot, but it will be interesting if Gibbs gets a run in the Arsenal side now and does well - something might still happen for him.

I was at the Emirates on Saturday and I was amazed at how negative Spurs were - Harry Redknapp said it was even for the first 40 minutes but it was clear that there was only one side trying to win the game.

You can't write off Spurs after one bad game, but they looked woefully short of the quality needed to challenge for a top four place.

In any case, if anybody is dropping out of the big four, it looks more likely that it will be Liverpool and not Arsenal at the moment.

They are all over the place and have put themselves under real pressure. But I reckon Manchester City and Aston Villa are the sides more likely to steal that fourth place and not Spurs.

Arsenal head to Wolves on Saturday and it is important there is no complacency in the air. Arsene Wenger will want another win before heading into the international break, and then he can relax and know that at least one of Chelsea or Manchester United will be dropping points on Sunday.

[img align=G]http://img.skysports.com/09/02/218x298/08-02-2009NigelWinterburn_1863502.jpg[/img]I SAID at the start of the season that my 1-2-3 for the Premier League was Chelsea, Manchester United and then Arsenal and, for once, I am still confident in that prediction.

As we will see on Sunday, Chelsea have the strongest squad and in Carlo Ancelotti they have brought in the best in the business, an experienced manager who won't tolerate anything less than success.

That is not to say they can't be beaten - Wigan and Aston Villa have already turned them over this season, and of course Arsenal will go into Sunday's game feeling they can do likewise.

The problem is that, after losing so badly at Sunderland, Arsenal are now under pressure in this game. It is a must-not-lose game - a draw would not be a disaster, but a defeat certainly would be.

It would put them 11 points behind Chelsea, albeit with a game in hand, and that is just becoming too big a lead. With a tough period to come over Christmas, you could see more points being dropped and with United also looking strong, Arsenal's challenge could fade.

People were so quick to write Arsenal off at the start of the season, saying they wouldn't even finish in the top four and, after being proved wrong, they are even keener to jump on them now and say they are out of the title race.

That won't definitely be the case if they are beaten on Sunday, but it will be a long way back from 11 points behind and four defeats in the first 13 games - Arsene will be keen not to have to find out.

If Arsene has had a difficult week then it pales in comparison with Thierry Henry - he is going to have to live with that handball against Ireland for the rest of his days.

That's a great shame because he is a great player and should be remembered for all his goals and records, but you know that in 10 or 20 years time if he is being interviewed, this incident is going to be brought up. It will stay with him.

Personally it hasn't changed my opinion of Thierry, but what he did was cheating and has been seen across the world. And for Ireland, the cost has been huge.

Arsenal could use a player like Thierry this weekend though. It promises to be a great game, but you just feel they are lacking a little up front and will have to play really well to take all the points.

we are the Arsenal !

I DON'T think Arsene Wenger could have in his wildest dreams expected to be as close to the top two as he is now after another amazing weekend of results.

After that defeat to Chelsea it looked like Arsenal were totally out of it, and I am as surprised as anybody that Chelsea have suddenly started dropping points all over the place and Manchester United are getting hammered at places like Fulham.

Arsene will know that his side have been given a second chance and it is vital they make the most of it and don't slip up over Christmas when the games come thick and fast.

It is a good thing he can still call on Alex Song for the next couple of games because he has really impressed me in recent weeks and is going to be a big miss when he goes off to the African Cup.

Denilson will probably be the player to step in for him, but he is not as strong physically and that is a problem that Song has helped the side move on from this season.

That said, other players are on the way back from injury and, more importantly, the side are looking confident again after a good run.

Villa on Sunday is a game I am looking forward to - I really like them as a side and I think Martin O'Neill has strengthened his squad this season and they are better equipped to last the distance that they couldn't manage last year.

Like quite a few teams they will be looking at what is going on at Liverpool and thinking 'this is it, this is the year we can do it and finish in the top four'.

That is easier said than done, and Liverpool will come back and have the experience, but they are in trouble and Rafa Benitez knows it.

The events at Manchester City over the past week have left a bad taste in the mouth, and it seems the owners just think they can buy automatic success in the Premier League - they are mistaken there and have got rid of a good manager who was doing a decent job of managing a club that can't have been easy to handle.

Money guarantees you nothing in this league and Arsenal are proof of that - Arsene doesn't spend much at all and comes in the top four every year. But he's an exception.

Happy Christmas to you all and let's hope 2010 is going to be a year to remember for Arsenal...

Citer[large]'Surprised Sol is back - but his experience could come in handy for Arsenal'[/large]
13 January 2010

SOL CAMPBELL back at Arsenal - I didn't see that one coming and I don't think many other people did either.

Yes, he's been training at the club, but when the rumours started circulating last week I didn't think anything of it.

After all, how often has Arsene Wenger been linked with a former player and it hasn't happened? Nicolas Anelka, Matthew Upson, Patrick Vieira for most of the last six months - it just isn't something Arsene has done before.

But now he has - and I can only think Sol has come in as a cover player for the rest of the season. The decisive factor has probably been that Philippe Senderos wants to leave, and that's quite clear as he hasn't even been in the squad or weakened cup sides recently.

I was only saying last week that Arsenal needed another defender. Arsene knows you really need four centre-backs and if Senderos goes and Johan Djourou remains injured, he has Thomas Vermaelen, William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre.

That is not enough, and while he could have signed anybody this month he has got Campbell right in front of him, a free agent, and has decided he's the man for the job.

Can he still do it at the top level? At 35 he is not over the hill but Sol has not played for six months, so he is going to be rusty. However, Arsene has had him in training and will have had his physios checking him out, so he must be in good shape. Sol was never a player who relied on pace, his game is more about positioning and he won't have lost that in six months.

Of course the last club he played for was Notts County and, well, that was an astonishing move looking back at it. To swap the top flight for League Two was incredible.

Fair play to Sol, he played one game and decided he'd made a mistake and was big enough to walk out of there when others would have just taken the money.

Now he is back at Arsenal, and it's a remarkable turnaround.

I don't think he'll feature in the two games with Bolton, but I have a feeling we might see him in the FA Cup game against Stoke.

Arsenal have a hectic few months now and Arsene could either sign somebody younger and risk throwing them in, or rely on an experienced old head to come in. Sol can still do that job.

Vince

Citer[large]'Arsenal's defending is just not good enough'[/large]

I WAS at the Emirates on Sunday and, like most people in the ground, I was very disappointed with what I saw from Arsenal.

Having played in so many big games like that myself, I couldn't believe the level of defending for all three of Manchester United's goals.

The first one was a great piece of skill from Nani to take out Clichy and Nasri, but then Denilson's attempted challenge was just terrible and Almunia's attempt at saving it wasn't much better. Four players at fault for one goal.

The second one was a superb finish from Wayne Rooney, but at one stage he was 10 yards behind three Arsenal players, and yet got in front of all them to score.

And on the third goal, Clichy's decision-making was just awful. He allowed Park to run through and score without making a challenge. It was terrible defending from a player who I rate highly but who has come back from injury looking very, very rusty. His form is a real concern and Arsene Wenger will be livid with that because this was a game where everything was on the line for his side.

They had worked very hard to take 24 points out of 30 since losing so badly to Chelsea two months earlier, to get themselves back in contention for the title. And then they just wasted that hard work.

The only consolation is that they have a chance to get right back involved on Sunday at Chelsea, but is has become a must-win game. It really is do-or-die on Sunday.

They certainly cannot afford to get beaten again, and the players simply have to realise that and raise their game accordingly.

When I was playing for Arsenal, if we had a bad result the first thing I would do was evaluate my own performance and think if there was anything I could do better myself.

Then we would address it as a team, and work from there. I am sure the Arsenal players feel they let themselves down on Sunday but now they have to put on a perfor-mance on Sunday that shows that.

This is not the time to be over-reacting or calling for Wenger to be sacked, which is ridiculous. The day he leaves, the club will never be the same again, people should remember that.

The players must show they care as much as he does on Sunday. It's a big game and they have to win it. The whole season is on the line.
